I basically stole [info]shinyhappydeath's parts list (because I'm lazy). I did find a cheaper case and added a floppy drive. The may suck, but they are still a standard.

So, the first fun was the many separate pin headers for the front USB ports. Worse were the power switch and other vital headers that lacked any direction on orientation. Several hours later, with much TV and stir fry, I was replacing the bandages over gouges the case took out of me and ready for a test. Well, it would be if Maxtor included an SATA power addapter as Plextor did. So, I did the next best thing and took the Maxtor drive out Patty to run the test. It turns out that patty doesn't have an IDE controler issue after all, the drive has a boot problem. The first time I ran the Win2K installer, I got a BSOD. I've never even seen a Win2K BSOD.

In other news, I found the old turner to go with the old speakers I dumpster dove recieved from my family. Now I need to add speaker wire to my shopping list. I also removed about a pound of unwanted weight from my head, but unfortunately my brain is intact.

so... did you get 2k to install and boot last night? It looks like you posted this after I talked to you.

You have been duped by my brilliant strategy of staying up too late. That post was 16 hours before I talked to you.

So I realized :) damn you and your late nights! *shakes fist*

The question remains.... what's up with your pile of parts?

I have only two remaining theories.
1) The boot controler on the MB is fried.
2) Both Maxtor drives are bad.

Which do you think is more likely?

both maxtor drives could be bad... or you could be hooking up the drives incorrectly? (master, slave, etc.... something to do with powering.... not sure). I highly doubt the mobo, however

The drives are correctly installed. The can be identified by the BIOS, so there is postive communication of something.

If the drives were IDE, you could put the ribbon on backwards and the BIOS wouldn't tell you anything usefull... the drives would just act very similar to how they're acting for you now.

Ergo, don't count on the BIOS for drive installation verification.

Well, first I have identical problems on SATA and IDE drives. Second, the IDE cables are directional, so they phsysically will not fit in the wrong direction. Third, I've done a few hundred IDE device installations. Fourth, improper drive installation for IDE causes the BIOS to improperly identify the drive or not identify it at all (as I know from experience). No, the problem is not improperly installed drives within reason.

If I remember right, the only time I got BSODs when installing the OS was when the RAM itself was bad. It would copy all the temporary files to the hard drive, reboot, and then BSOD. Maybe try putting only one stick in and see if that works? I've had multiple issues with generic memory, so I've started to get namebrand stuff, like Crucial. I can't tell what you're using, though.

I am not getting to the point of reboot, so my problem is apparently different from yours.
